What is a Franchise?

Understanding the Franchise: Points to Consider Before Going Into Business for Yourself

Thinking about going into business for yourself? Why start out on uneven ground?

When you begin thinking about going into business, some of you will think about independent business opportunities. Some dream about little corner store, or  the independent coffee shop.

However, when many people consider independent businesses, they only go so far. They may realize that they don't know where to begin to develop a business plan. They may find that they don't know where to look to find suppliers. They may not know how to market a business to set it apart from others in the area. And, as a result, not all of them will get very far with opening their own businesses.

A franchise, on the other hand, offers those who want to go into business for themselves more opportunities. Franchising, time and time again, has shown itself to be the most likely way to succeed when you go into business for yourself.

When you choose to open a franchise as a way of owning your own business, you will still be able to decide what kind of business is interesting to you. You will be able to look for franchising opportunities that let you take advantage of your love of luxury cars with a PrivatePartyCars location. If you tackle home repair projects and have a great time with it, then you can look at franchise opportunities with ACE Hardware.

Similarly, from fast food to fitness, from toddlers to taxes and from postage to people post-retirement, you will be able to find a franchise opportunity that will allow you to focus on serving your community.

But, rather than your determining that the business is necessary in your area, a franchise will conduct market research to see whether or not their concept would work where you are. Rather than leaving it up to you to explain why your business is different from those of your competitors, a franchise would help you to determine both who your competition is and how to set yourself apart from them.

In other words, when you go into business for yourself with a franchise, you will be able to start your business on a foundation of success.

You will work with an organization that has put time and effort into establishing a presence. They have a logo that works and that people – your potential customers – recognize. They have a marketing campaign that gets attention.

And they will work with you within your legal and commercial partnership to make sure that your business is successful. They'll provide you with the systems you need to operate. They will provide you with the training that you need so that you can be sure that you're running your new business the right way.

Before you go into business ask yourself the following:
• Do I have what it takes to develop an effective business plan?
• Do I have what it takes to create an effective marketing strategy?
• Do I have the training to run a business?
• Would I benefit from being given guidance that will help me to succeed?

And, once you've asked the questions, recognize that – by choosing a franchise over an independent business – you can have all of those things: a successful business and marketing plan, training and support. You'll see that opening a franchise just might be the perfect solution for owning your own business.
