Franchises: Not Just for Young People

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Franchises make starting a business easy at any age. There´s absolutely no reason why franchise opportunities can´t be ideal for those over the average business age. In fact, it´s a great way to get started in a business without wasting months or even years building your business up to the point of earning a profit.

Instead, you get a business plan that works, complete with a developed brand and strategies that have already been proven. Not to mention all the support you can handle. This, combined with the training that most franchise opportunities provide means you have a very good chance of making the business successful fairly quickly.

This rapid start means that you can actually begin at any age. Even if you aren´t familiar with the industry, it´s usually fairly easy to learn all you need to know via franchise training sessions. These will familiarize you with the industry and prepare you for the life of a franchisee in the industry of your choice.

Just because you´re older doesn´t mean you can´t get into franchises. In fact, this could be the best opportunity you have to set up a business quickly and start earning relatively soon. It´s a great way to ensure you make the most of your life.

Franchise Opportunities: 5 Things to Consider

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

When researching a franchise opportunity, it´s very important to look at some specific areas of the franchise. This will let you know if the opportunity is right for you and whether or not the franchise will work in your area.

Need. Is there a need for this type of business in your area? If there isn´t a demand, you´ll find that your franchise opportunity fizzles out and dies. It´s pretty hard to make a go of it with a business that no one is interested in.

Training. What is the training schedule like? A good franchise will give you full on training, not just a manual or something simple like this. On-site training at an existing franchises or in a special training facility is often the best.

Support. Ongoing support and aid when you need it is invaluable in a franchise and one of the main reasons to opt for a franchise, rather than starting up your own business. With support, you´ll be able to solve problems quickly and easily.

Growth. How fast is the franchise growing? Knowing as much as you can about the past of the franchise is a great way to get a feel for where it´s going. A new franchise is going to have very little history, of course, but with longer lasting ones, you´ll see whether the franchise is in demand or not.

Competition. Is there a lot of competition in your area? If so, you´ll want to make sure that the franchise you are going with has something very different or special to offer . . . otherwise, it will be a hard go.

Make sure you research any franchise you are interested in thoroughly. You wouldn´t jump into starting your own business in no time flat and you don´t want to do the same with a franchise.

Choose a Franchise Opportunity That Meshes With Your Lifestyle

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Does a restaurant franchise sound like fun to you? There are a lot more factors to consider than simply whether or not a franchise opportunity is interesting or in the industry you have experience with.

A good example is the restaurant industry. Are you ready to work holidays, nights and weekends? If you like to sleep all weekend and go to bed early, then a restaurant franchise probably isn´t a good fit for you. While food might be a great interest of yours, it will be very difficult to make a go of it if you have to drag yourself to work each day. And, as a business, franchises are work!

When looking at franchise opportunities, remember to keep in mind that you will be the owner. That means you´ll work longer hours than the employees and have far more responsibility. If you are a person who thrives on schedules and early nights, then a retail store might be ideal. However, for anyone who likes to be flexible and change their schedule easily, a mobile pet grooming franchise might be better.

Pick something that you are interested in, but make sure it fits with your existing lifestyle or you´ll be miserable. And when you don´t like your franchise business, it´s pretty hard to get enthused about it enough to make it work!

Franchise Market Research: Learn Before You Invest

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Do you have a good idea of how well your chosen franchise will work in your town? Let´s say you´re interested in setting up a coffee house. Take the time to look around your area and see how many coffee shops are already in existence. What do they offer? What´s the difference between the shops already here and the one you want to set up?

Having a clear idea in your mind as to what you are getting into. If there is a lot of competition, you definitely need a franchise opportunity that stands out from the crowd. On the other hand, if there is no competition at all, you might want to find out why. Is it simply that no one thought of the idea before or is there really no demand for it?

Some franchises will actually help you with your franchise market research. They want to be successful, after all, and having you set up in a place that isn´t conducive to business won´t help the master franchise very much.

You may also want to do a poll or talk to a variety of people to find out if they would be interested in your proposed franchise. If you get a largely positive response, it´s a definite sign to go forward. Do your research before investing in a franchise opportunity and you´ll be far more likely to choose one that will actually work in your community.

Home Care Franchises Offer Non-Medical Aid

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

There are plenty of situations when people need home care that isn´t necessarily medical in nature. Home care franchises are the perfect solution for anyone who is in this situation. For those interested in investing in a franchise that makes a major difference, home care franchise opportunities are really a great way to go.

Home care is a booming business with so many people reaching retirement age and discovering that living on their own isn´t necessarily as possible as it was when they were younger. There are many tasks that can be difficult for the elderly and home care franchises offer an alternative to living in a home, which is often something to avoid.

However, home care franchises don´t just cater to the elderly. You can also find home care franchises that offer services to anyone who finds themselves unable to perform their daily tasks, whether that be a pregnant woman confined to bed or someone recovering from a fractured leg. You don´t have to have medical training to get them through this period, and all training needed will be provided by the franchise. This means that just about anyone who is interested can get started in a home care business.

Franchises As a Second Income

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Not everyone who invests in a franchise is looking for a full-time business. You may already have a job that you really enjoy, but may be looking for a secondary income and there are several franchises that are ideal for just that.

Many franchises require full-time participation, but not all franchise opportunities are like this. There are two types of franchises that are ideal as second income.

Full time franchises, like restaurants, are often able to be run by other people. So, you set them up, train employees to take over and continue with your own job while your secondary income works in the background.

Part time franchises can be a better idea, they can be run on weekends or evenings and offer you full control over everything. This means no complaints or hassles with employees while you are trying to work your regular job and often less stress, though it may mean less income, as well.

Whichever type of franchise you choose for your second income, rest assured that it is something many people do and you can make it work, just plan ahead.

What Franchise Personality Are You?

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Not everyone interested in a franchise has the same mindset. It´s a good idea to know what you´re like so you can choose the perfect franchise for your personality.

In Control: These people tend to like to control everything and thrive on leadership. Having employees may not be a great idea because the In Control person prefers to do everything themselves.

Some good franchises for those who like to be in control include home based or small, one man franchise opportunities.

Leader: The leader is an expert at managing others, but might not want to do much of the dirty work himself. This is ideal for larger franchise opportunities that let you hire a variety of people to work under you.

Adrenaline Junkie: These franchise investors just love a challenge. Hi-energy franchises are best if you thrive on stress and working hard. Something like a restaurant or fast food chain is ideal.

Laid back: The laid back franchisee needs a flexible schedule, so having a store or fixed location franchise isn´t usually a great idea. However, any type of franchise opportunity that lets you set your own schedule is perfect.

Whatever your franchise personality, there is a franchise opportunity out there for you. It´s just a matter of identifying your strengths and weaknesses and finding the right franchise for your personality.

Franchise Decisions: Which One to Pick?

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

With so many franchise opportunities to select from, how on earth are you supposed to pick one that not only fits your interests, but also provides the best chance at success?

First of all, you need to decide what your interests are. What type of franchise industry interests you? There are so many franchises out there that you will most likely have more than one option in the industry you choose.

Next, you will need to do some research. Read up on the franchise opportunities available to you in the industry of your choice. Some will appeal more to you than others. You may also want to talk to existing franchisees to find out their opinion of the franchise.

Examine the area where you intend to set up the business and note any potential competitors. One franchise may offer more benefits than another to help beat out the competition. For example, rather than going with another mega coffee house when you have 25 Starbucks in the area, why not opt for a cozy home-style one?

Finding the ideal franchise requires a bit more than simply picking the one that you like best. Some market research and investigations will help you choose a franchise opportunity that will be a success as well as one that you enjoy.

Franchise Earnings Claims: What You Need to Know

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Earnings claims are what the franchisor gives you to indicate possible earnings with the franchise. However, these are NOT a guarantee that you´ll be earning the same amount.

Franchises have to provide the source of their estimates . . . which are used to create earnings claims. This should be from existing franchisees who have provided their earnings. But, again, this is NOT a guarantee. Each franchise will end up earning differently, some will be more successful than others, so while an earnings claim can give you an idea, it can´t tell you exactly what your earnings will be.

You can ask to see proof of earnings. The franchiser should be able to give you a percentage of franchisees that actually met the proposed amount given in an earnings claim.

Don´t just take the claims as a statement of what you will earn. It´s possible that only a few people are actually making the big bucks and that´s something that you need to examine before you get into the franchise.

Franchise Mistakes You Shouldn´t Make

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

No one is perfect, but jumping headfirst into a franchise opportunity without checking it out properly first is a huge mistake and one that can be easily avoided. It´s not that the franchise is likely to be a bad one, it´s just that you need to know exactly what to expect in order to make it work for you and be a successful franchisee.

The worst mistake you can make when investigating a franchise is not reading and understanding the paperwork. This is huge. Without a proper understanding of what is expected of you and that could lead to problems with breach of contract in the future, since you´ll never be exactly sure of what your end of the deal is.

Not talking to franchisees is another mistake that many people make. You don´t want to be blindsided, so even if you think you understand what the franchise involves, it´s a big help to talk with those who are already in the trenches, so to speak, to get a more accurate view of how things work.

Sinking everything you have into a business is another common mistake. You should try to keep 25% aside for future costs and surviving those first couple of months. This ensures you won´t be caught up in financial problems at a later date due to poor planning.

There are plenty of things to keep in mind when you are checking out a franchise, but you really need to make sure that you know what you are getting into and the common errors above are made by many hopeful franchisees. While they don´t mean certain failure, things can run a lot smoother if you are prepared for what is to come.
